Mexican and Canadian citizens may change or extend the TN visa
status at a U.S port of entry or by having their employer file the I-129. But H1B visa
holders have the only way to extend or change the visa status by filing an I-129 petition by
the employer. Because the citizens are not able to alter their status at a port of entry, this is
one of the main disadvantages of the H1B visa.
